When I was visiting Killarney, I kept thinking how nice it must be to have such a beautiful national park right at your doorstep. Just steps away from the centre of town, Killarney National Park encompasses some of the best scenery in Ireland.
Killarney National Park is a sublime collection of lakes, mountains, woodlands, and waterfalls. Three large lakes- Lough Leane, Muckross Lake, and the Upper Lake- make up about a quarter of the park, while the rest consists largely of oak, yew, and wet woodlands. The protected landscape is a haven for wildlife, including Ireland’s only wild herd of native red deer.
Amid the natural scenery you’ll find some man-made beauty as well. There’s Ross Castle sitting prominently on the shore of Lough Leane, the Victorian era Muckross House looking out across a great lawn towards Torc Mountain, and the preserved ruins of Muckross Abbey and the island-based Innisfallen Abbey.
I loved Killarney National Park so much that I spent all my time in Killarney there, setting foot in town only to eat dinner.
My favourite way to explore the park was on a boat and bike trip through the Lakes of Killarney and Gap of Dunloe, but I also enjoyed a late afternoon walk around Muckross Abbey, an evening visit to Ross Castle, and an early morning stroll from Muckross Estate to Torc Waterfall.
Whether you choose to explore by foot, bike, boat, or horse and buggy, be prepared to take plenty of pictures of Killarney National Park because its beauty is irresistible!
