Visiting Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park- One of Japan’s Largest Flower Parks

I love visiting gardens on my travels, so it’s no surprise that the Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park was a highlight of my 3 day trip to the Tottori prefecture of Japan.
With about 50 hectares, the Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park is one of the largest flower gardens in Japan. There’s a wide variety of flowers blooming throughout the four seasons, so no matter when you visit, you’re sure to see many beautiful sceneries.
My Visit to Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park
I visited Tottori Hankairo Flower Park in early August and was lucky enough to be greeted with clear views of Mount Daisen, which overlooks the park.
The first thing I did after arriving was go up to the Observation Gallery, a raised, covered walkway that circles the main section of the park. From here I could enjoy an elevated view of the gardens, looking down on the Flower Valley (Keukenhof Corner) and the European Garden, before arriving at Flower Hill, one of the park’s most striking gardens.
Flower Hill was my favourite area of the park because the land was completely carpeted with colour. How could you not feel joyful looking at such brilliant flowers?
I loved the vibrant fields of yellow (my favourite colour) so much, that I missed out on visiting a few of the other gardens due to spending so much time here!
From Flower Hill, I made my way past a small waterfall flowing from the roof of the walkway, and then into the East Wing to see the lily exhibit, the park’s feature flower.
After enjoying the lilies, I headed back outside to the Mist Garden. Flowerbeds and hanging baskets lined the perimeter, while a light mist floated up from the centre of the circular garden. There weren’t as many flowers here as in other areas of the park, but I loved the symmetrical design.
Passing through the Mist Garden, I followed the sidewalk into the Flower Dome, the giant greenhouse in the middle of the park. The dome was packed with tropical and subtropical plants including palm trees, hibiscus and orchids.
Leaving the Flower Dome, I walked to the Floating Flower Beds. Arranged over a pond, the latticed grid of planters was filled with happy looking sunflowers- definitely a summer staple.
Wishing I had more time to spend at Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park, I made one last trip up to the Observation Gallery. Mount Daisen was showing itself even clearer than before, gifting me with the perfect view to enjoy before leaving the park.

Tips for Visiting Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park
Location: Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park is located near the city of Yonago, at 110 Tsuruta, Nanbu-cho, Saihaku-gun, Tottori.
Getting There: The Tottori Prefectural Flower Park is easily reached by car or shuttle bus from Yonago. The complimentary shuttle bus leaves from JR Yonago Station and is a 25 minute drive.
- The first shuttle bus leaves Yonago Station at 9:00 am. Departure times depend on the season, but are either twice an hour (at the top and bottom of the hour) or hourly (at the top of the hour). Confirm the current shuttle schedule here.
Opening Hours: The park is open from 9:00 am-5:00 pm (April-November) and 9:00 am- 4:30 pm (December-March). It is closed on Tuesdays (December-March and July-August) and from December 26-31. Confirm current hours here.
Admission Fees: Admission fees vary between 500 and 1,000 yen depending on the month. Discounted rates for students are available.
Services: On site there is a restaurant, souvenir store, local specialty shop and garden shop.
- There is a picnic area if you plan to bring your own lunch.
- Kids may enjoy the small train that makes a 15-minute route through the park.
Special Events: In the summer and winter there are illumination nights where you can view the “Moonlight Flower Garden”.
